A Kenyan man and his wife were on Saturday, admitted at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya after the husband attacked his wife with a machete and later attempted tocommit suicide at a trading centre.
The bizarre incident occurred in a lodging room they had booked for the night. The Kenyan man, Robert Mwanda (38) a Sony Sugar Factory employee, hacked his wife, Ms Juliet Akinyi (27), several times with a machete and then fled.
“We received a report from Migori police that a woman had been attacked and injured,” Kisii County Police Commander Agnes Mudambah told the Nation.
“She had called her relatives who then called the police officers based in the county. They contacted us with the details and we rushed to the club where we found the woman lying in a pool of blood.”
After she was admitted to the hospital, Ms Mudambah said that her officers received a report of a man who attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself in front of a moving lorry at Daraja Mbili trading centre.
“When the driver stopped, they realized that the man was bleeding from the neck. They brought him to the hospital. From the description we got from the machete attack victim’s relatives, we discovered it was her husband,” she said.
She said that the man had initially travelled to Kisii town from his Migori workplace.
He later invited his wife to the town where they had drinks in the club before retiring to bed at around 11pm.
The Kisii hospital Chief Executive Officer Enoch Ondari said the man had been admitted at the same facility with what he described as “a self-inflicted” wound.
Dr Ondari also said the man had taken a poisonous substance.
“We suspect that he swallowed a pesticide after which he slit his own throat,” he said.
According to Ms Florence Anyango, Ms Akinyi’s sister, the couple had not had a serious disagreement before, although the man mentioned infidelity before attacking her.
