Three soldiers, 7 civilians killed in Niger clash

The Nigeria Army said on Friday that three fighters and seven regular people kicked the bucket in a conflict amongst officers and a few inhabitants of Kpaidna people group in Niger.

Major Njideka Agwu, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 31 Artillery Brigade, Minna, made this known in a meeting with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.

Agwu said that the episode happened at 2.00 a.m. on Friday in the group situated in Bosso Local Government Area of the state.

"The 31 Artillery Brigade of the Nigeria Army, Minna, was on a joint operation with the Nigeria Air Force Quick Response Group in the territory when we were assaulted by the villagers.

"We were on a cordon and hunt operation in the town since we got knowledge report that there were stores of arms and ammo in the zone.

"Amid the operation, three officers and seven regular citizens lost their lives, while 57 villagers were captured by the joint operation,'' she said.

Agwu said that arms and ammo were found amid the operation which was all the while progressing.

"Inconvenience began when a portion of the villagers denied the military access to their homes to empower officers hunt down arms and ammo accepted to be stockpiled there.

"Amid the conflict, six operation vehicles having a place with the armed force were crushed by the villagers; four were set on fire while two were vandalized,'' she said.

Agwu ordered well behaved residents in the zone to go about their ordinary organizations as the operation was to defend lives and property.

She asked individuals from the general population with helpful data that would prompt the recuperation of arms and ammo in the range to answer to the closest security organization.

DSP Bala Elkanah, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, affirmed the occurrence which he depicted as "simply military matter.''

"It was absolutely a military operation. We (police) were not included," he told NAN.
