Delivering the main lecture of the day on the LAWS ON WOMEN AND CHILD TRAFFICKING, the Nollywood veteran, Barr Kenneth Okonkwo enumerated the stiff punishment prescribed by the law against traffickers to include:
Mrs Patricia Akpangbo, Ekesons Parcels Service |
In our criminal justice system, most crimes are punished by
imprisonment with an option of fine. In the trafficking of women and
children, the crimes are punished by imprisonment and a fine or at
best with imprisonment without an option of fine. This means that
whoever indulges in such acts in Nigeria must go to jail.
ii) Forfeiture of assets and properties of the traffickers
A court, in imposing a sentence on any person under the Act shall in
addition to any other sentence imposed under the Act, order that the
person forfeits to the Victims of Trafficking Trust Fund all properties,
assets and proceeds derived or obtained, directly or indirectly,
through the commission of an offence under the Act.
iii) Trafficer to pay compensation to victim
Where an offender is convicted of an offence under the Act, the Court
may order the offender to pay compensation to the victim, in addition
to any other punishment ordered by the Court.
iv) Trafficer banned for life from travelling outside Nigeria
The passport of any Nigerian convicted of an offence under the Act is
forfeited to the Federal Government, and such forfeited passport shall
be handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service for appropriate
action, and shall not be returned to that person unless the President
directs otherwise, after the grant of a pardon on the exercise of
prerogative of mercy under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria.
v) Trafficer to be extradited
Offences under the Act are extraditable crimes for which extradition
may be requested, granted or obtained under the Extradition Act.
He concluded that with these laws, Nigeria has demonstrated a zero tolerance for trafficking in persons and submitted that no sensible person should indulge in such nefarious acts in Nigeria
The AGN Chairman, Abuja Chapter, Onwurah Agility, thanked all for their participation in all the events
