British Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom pulled out of the race to become the leader of the ruling Conservative Party and the country’s next prime minister on Monday.
The move appears to clear the way for Home Secretary Theresa May to become the U.K.'s next prime minister.
Lawmakers from the party last week chose May and Leadsom as the final two candidates to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron , who announced his resignation after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a referendum on June 23.
Leadsom apologized to May on Monday after saying in an interview with the Times of London that being a mother made her a better candidate for prime minister than May, who has no children.
