Champions League success is not Paris Saint-Germain’s sole aim – Unai Emery

Champions League success is not Paris Saint-Germain’s sole aim – Unai Emery

Unai Emery hopes to “achieve big things” with Paris Saint-Germain, but has denied that winning the Champions League is the club’s sole objective.
Former Sevilla coach Emery was appointed by PSG last week, replacing Laurent Blanc despite the Frenchman winning three straight Ligue 1 titles.
The natural inference was that the club’s Qatari owners were seeking a coach to help them make the breakthrough on the continental stage, particularly as Emery has led Sevilla to Europa League wins in each of the last three seasons.
But Emery insists that he will not purely be focusing on the Champions League.
“The Champions League? Of course it is an important aim, but there are others,” Emery told a news conference.

“Expectations are very elevated at a big club like this, it is a club of winners. What is the limit of this team? There is none.
“Our goal is to continue progressing, improving and growing. There is great optimism. With the current team, I think we can achieve big things.”
Emery was the Paris club’s only choice to succeed Blanc, according to president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
“He was the first option, the first choice, we didn’t speak to anyone other than coach Unai,” the club president said.
“He is a coach who works very, very hard, who is close with the players and who has developed young players — that is very important for us.”
