The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has again sounded a note of warning to members of public against scammers who feign customs recruitment and selling of vehicles, saying that if customs wants to recruit or auction vehicles, it would not be through internet but must be made known through a legitimate means to the public.
Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Customs Service, Ports and Terminal Multi-Services Limited (PTML) Steve Okonmah, a Chief Superintendent of Customs gave this warning.
CSC Okonmah who spoke after some fraudsters had been arrested by customs recently. This included the arrest of one of the most notorious fraudsters involved in online advertising scams on non-existing vacancies in government agencies.
The suspected kingpin whose real name was given as Abubakar Rilwan had earlier been declared wanted by some security agencies in the country before his arrest.
Abubakar Rilwan, who is physically challenged, is one of the principal actors and suspect in a job/auction scam syndicate. Whatever he lacks in physical ability, he makes up for in his exceptional ability to manipulate and swindle his victims.
“He has duped desperate job and auction seekers to the tune of over N20 million, sometimes using the services of lawyers.

“In one of his escapades, he collected money from seven job seekers in Taraba State, issued them fake appointment letters, and caused them to travel all the way to Bayelsa State for fake training. “They got there before realising they had been duped”.
Rilwan is currently in the custody of the Nigeria Customs Service undergoing further investigation.
“Let me reaffirm the statement of my national PRO that the Nigerian Customs Service is not conducting recruitment exercise. If we are doing, it cannot be on social media. Those people doing so are scammers. Any one dealing with them does so at his own peril. Why should customs ask you to pay money for recruitment? They are collecting money and giving their victims fake letters directing them elsewhere to go for training. Some people were duped in Taraba State and directed to go to Bayelsa State for training” he lamented.
According to him, these set of criminals have infiltrated victims with auction sales.
“It is just the same thing with auction sales. They will place the picture of senior officers on choice cars. One of them was giving fake auction papers which was addressed as Zone ‘C’ , Seme Lagos. Our Zone ‘C’ is Owerri, not Seme, Lagos. Customs is not recruiting and customs is not auctioning”, he warned.
