The Federal Government (FG), is to develop tourism capacity building centres in the 774 local government areas and the five area councils of Abuja.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed disclosed this at a meeting with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in Madrid, Spain on Tuesday
Mohammed said the proposed centres would bring tourism development to the grassroots and develop women’s skill to participate in national economic growth.
He said women constituted 55 per cent of the nation’s population and 80 per cent of them living in the rural areas.
“If you develop women’s capacity, you are improving the economy of the nation and building its stability.
“Women are key to the stability of the nation, therefore, if you develop their capacity, you are building the nation.
The minister said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was moving the tourism sector from the margin to become a major driver of the economy.
He said the country welcomed the world tourism organisation’s offer of technical assistance to develop the nation’s tourism sector.
The minister underscored the importance of accurate data collation in the development of the tourism sector and the contributions of critical stakeholders such as hoteliers in that regard.
The Secretary-General of UNWTO, Mr Taleb Rifai, said the organisation would support the government in establishing the capacity building centres.
Rifai suggested that in developing the centres, government should link the project to its ongoing programme of conditional cash transfer to vulnerable Nigerians.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the UNWTO made five presentations on the activities and programmes of the organisation to the minister.(NAN)
