Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, on Wednesday, stated that he would not rescind his administration’s decision to review the salaries of its workers.
Almakura disclosed this at the Lafia Government House while playing host to members of the state executive and security councils who paid him Sallah homage, maintaining that the decision was taken in the best interest of the state.
The governor noted that the new salary table was in tandem with the national minimum, stressing that the measure has become necessary in view of the current economic downturn.
“Except our workers don’t want us to provide drugs and other facilities in our public hospitals, except they don’t want government to fix our schools. This decision is taken in the best interest of the state as far as government is concerned”.
The governor maintained that government was not regretting the decision to come up with the new salary table and appealed to members of the organized labour to go back to work as no amount of protest strike action would make government rescind its decision on the matter.
He pointed out that the state government would no longer afford to completely channel the meagre resources accruing to the state from the federation account to payment of workers who constitute less than 2 percent of the state’s total population at the detriment of the about 98 percent that were not privileged to be on the payroll of the state.
“I can’t just be a paymaster to the state. It is the responsibility of government to cater for the need of its entire citizenry but with what is happening, I am fast becoming just a paymaster and that is why it has become necessary for government to take this decision,” he maintained.
