Factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff, has insisted that only his faction of the party could present a candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Edo State, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is yet to inform him of the rejection of his faction’s candidate for the September 10 election.
It would be recalled that the Sheriff-led faction had submitted the name of Matthew Iduoriyekwemwen as its candidate for the Edo election to INEC, after the Makarfi faction had submitted Mr. Ize-Iyamu’s name. However, INEC on Tuesday confirmed Ize-Iyamu as the governorship candidate of the party in Edo state.
Speaking when a delegation of South-South young professionals for good governance paid him a visit in Abuja, the former Borno state governor urged his supporters to remain calm and work for the success of his candidate.

Represented by his deputy, Cairo Ojuogboh, he declared: “I, hereby, dispel the rumor and categorically state that INEC has not yet communicated to us. INEC is still considering all judgments and orders of the court.
“As we speak, the order of Federal High Court, Abuja, specifically asked INEC to recognize only candidates presented by Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman of the party.
“The court in Port Harcourt is not superior to the court in Abuja and as such, cannot reverse the specific orders of the Abuja court ruling that INEC can only accept PDP candidates from Sheriff leadership for purposes of Edo and Ondo governorship elections.
“In view of the above, I call on all our PDP members to remain calm and call on our candidate to go ahead and campaign vigorously and seriously to win the election in Edo State.”
