Some of the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) that were compulsorily retired from the Nigeria Police Force last Friday have threatened to seek justice in the court of law over their premature retirement.
It was gathered that some of them would not allow ‘sleeping Dogs to lie’ as they have vowed to recover their uniforms through the court and the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, some security experts have condemned the action of the Federal Government of retiring the 22 officers through the Police Service Commission (PSC).
It was reported recently that there was the likelihood that those officers who are senior to the new Acting Inspector General of Police, (Ag. IGP) Ibrahim Idris, with Assistant Inspector General (AIG) ranks, risk early retirement.
In the statement, signed by the Head of Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the chairman of the PSC, Mike Okiro, thanked the affected officers for their “meritorious service to the nation” and wished them well in their future endeavours.
Some of the affected officers on sighting the statement, grumbled, insisting that they were junior to the Acting Inspector General of Police Idris Ibrahim.
For example, AIG Olufemi Ogunbayode is said to be junior to the IGP since he was just recently promoted.
Reviewing the development, a top senior officer at the Police Headquarters in Abuja said that, “the retired officers are not taking it lightly, stressing, “they have threatened to fight it out and get justice, as some of them are junior to the IGP.

“Femi Ogunbayode was just promoted recently, so if it is based on seniority, why would they retire such an officer,” he declared.
Another police source said: “Despite all the bad names given to AIG Mbu Joseph Mbu, that officer still remains the best IGP material. The problem with our country is that we don’t put the right people in positions. We allow politics and sentiments to rob us of good pointsmen in public office. Take a tour to the Police Staff College, Jos, where he served last, he has transformed the place.”
“AIG Umar Manko is an officer that achieved so much in Lagos and brought the end of legendary robber, Abbey Godogodo, to an end and yet, he has been retired unceremoniously when he still has over three years to spend in the Police Service.
Security expert, Patrick Agbambu also criticized the mass retirement, saying that the Nigeria police community would suffer operational bankruptcy, as most of the officers retired received the best global police trainings.
Agbambu, who is the Managing Director of Security Watch Africa, added: “The security situation in the country presently requires a lot of experience. What was the government thinking about when it sacked these fine officers? These officers have field experience that cannot be washed away easily. Whoever gave the advise to Mr. President to retire these officers did not give a good advise.”
