Lawmaker’s death is suspected case of murder – Police

A member of Oyo State House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu, was on Friday night assassinated by yet to be identified gunmen, who trailed him on a motorbike to the front of his residence at Alakia area of the state.
Aremu, who was until his demise the chairman of the House Committee on Public Relations and Security, and a member of the Labour Party (LP) representing Orelope constituency, was shot dead at about 11pm
The assailants were said to have shot at him while trying to alight from his car, before they escaped into the night, with the deceased’s GSM handset.
He was however rushed to the nearby Toun Hospital, along Iwo road, where he was confirmed dead. He was said to have accompanied other members of the House to the Bodija, Ibadan home of former governor Adebayo Alao Akala to break fast before the tragic incidence.
The State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, while confirming the lawmaker’s death said it was a suspected case of murder, adding, “it is true that the lawmaker was killed. It is a suspected case of murder.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Leye Oyebade, has ordered a discreet investigation into the matter. The culprits will be arrested. We assure all residents of Oyo State that we will get the culprits arrested,” the PPRO said.
Also, the state chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the murder of the lawmaker as most shocking and disturbing and called for a thorough investigation into the matter by the relevant security agencies, with a view to bringing the culprits to justice.
In a statement by its Director of Publicity and Strategy, Olawale Sadare, APC said the killing of Aremu, described as energetic, diligent and an easy-going politician; has opened another sad chapter in the history of the Pacesetter State.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) in the state said the murder was painful and uncalled for, wondering what the gunmen hoped to achieve at this time when all Nigerians are praying for peace and stability of the nation.
The PDP in a statement by its public relations officer, Kehinde Salawu, tasked the government and security agencies not to leave any stone unturned in unraveling the killers of the lawmaker.
