Organised Labour in Niger state has undertaken to fish out ghost workers on government payroll and to commence payment of salaries to authentic workers with N1.3 billion to be made available by the state government for the next three months.
The state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Yahaya Ndako, stated this at the weekend in a press briefing to announce the suspension of the four-day strike embarked by workers in protest of 50 per cent cut in salaries.
He explained that the agreements were reached in mediation parley brokered by the leadership of the House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Ahmed Marafa Guni.
He said the government had also agreed to look into other demands of the workers within three months and thanked the Niger state House of Assembly for its intervention in the crisis.
While presenting the agreement to parties to sign, the Speaker, Niger state House of Assembly, Ahmed Marafa Guni, said the quick intervention of the leadership of the House was to ensure industrial harmony and avoid visiting unnecessary hardship on the people.

He explained that the House had mediated in the crisis for two days and expressed happiness that peace had been brokered at last and workers agreed to go back to work.
He thanked the parties involved in the salary crisis for the trust and confidence they reposed on the Assembly for the intervention, promising that the leadership would monitor closely the implementation of the agreement reached at the parley.
Speaking in an interview, the Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), Alhaji Mohammed DanYahaya, who led government team to the negotiation table, promised that government would honour all provisions of the agreement.
He said government was grateful to Organised Labour for taking up the responsibility of fishing out ghost workers in the state workforce, adding that “government has been spending over N1.7 billion in payment of salaries and if Labour can use N1.3 billion to pay salaries, it would be a great save for the government and we are happy about it.”
He explained that government had already agreed to pay the shortfall in June salaries at the end of this month and thanked the workers for their understanding.
