The Acting Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Alhaji Abdulrazak Dangiri has stressed the need for Religious organisations to consistently collaborate with government Agencies to reduce the level of criminality in Nigeria.
He said that religious leaders must use their vantage positions to end the scourge of human trafficking.
The Ag. Director-General of NAPTIP was speaking today in Abuja when he received in audience a delegation from CARITAS Nigeria led by the Executive Director, Rev.Fr. Evaristus Bassey. The mission of the delegation was to seek collaboration with NAPTIP for the hosting of an International Conference on Human Trafficking.
Alhaji Dangiri who was delighted with the plans of the Catholic Church gave the support of the Agency for the conference.
Speaking earlier, Rev. Fr. Evaristus Bassey outlined the goals of the conference to include: raising awareness about trafficking among people within and from Africa, with a special focus on the trafficking of children for labour and sexual exploitation, trafficking in crisis situations and trafficking in the maritime industry; Connect various stakeholders and strengthen cooperation between countries of origin, transits and destination in order to explore collaborative strategies that can be used to prevent human trafficking in Africa; promote common Church actions together with other faith-based organization that stand by victims to combat trafficking and slavery; and to contribute to the achievements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through actions aimed at combating trafficking and slavery.
The International Conference which has been tentatively slated for September, 2016 in Abuja, will be attended by over 120 highly placed religious leaders of all faiths, leading global experts on the international law of human trafficking, representatives of various international organizations, representative of the United Kingdom’s Independent Anti-slavery Commission as well as Migrant officers from the African Union.
